About the Marxism Day School
Marxism Day School 2026 is a full day of anti-capitalist ideas, discussion, and debate in Melbourne. The event will feature sessions on topics such as class and inequality, revolutionary history, racism and the far right, gender and sexuality, unionism, Marxist theory, and more. The day will conclude with a panel discussion featuring long-time socialist activists.
This isn’t your typical university lecture or classroom experience.
Each session includes a talk delivered by an activist with years of experience organising on the ground. There’s also dedicated time for open discussion, where attendees are encouraged to ask questions, share thoughts, and learn from others.
There is a Marxist Foundations stream of sessions dedicated to the nitty gritty core of Marxist concepts like capitalism, class, revolution, and what socialists should do in the here and now.
Suggested readings will be provided for each session to help introduce key concepts and prepare for discussion.
Whether you’re new to socialism or a seasoned activist, Marxism Day School offers an important space or left-wing thinkers and organisers to connect, learn and get organised.
The conference is being held at Brunswick Town Hall, easily accessible on the 19 tram. Registration opens at 9am, and sessions begin at 10am sharp so aim to arrive by 9:30.

About Socialist Alternative
We want to tear down the system of capitalism and all the oppression and injustice that comes from it.
We founded Students for Palestine 15 years ago, which has organised the student movement for Palestine on campuses across the country.
We stand for radical, uncompromising trade unionism based on strikes and collective action, not begging the bosses for crumbs. We have members who have led strikes in workplaces across every sector from call centres and retail to factories. This year we helped organise a rank and file campaign in the teachers’ union to reject the offer promoted by the Labor government and union leaders.
We were centrally involved in founding Victorian Socialists, and will be campaigning to build a socialist challenge to the crap of the capitalist mainstream in the upcoming state election.
We need socialist organisation to overthrow capitalism
Capitalism isn’t going to overthrow itself. Socialists need to get organised to fight against injustice and oppression, and eventually the system altogether.
As Marx said, “philosophers have only interpreted the world, the point is to change it”.
